Kırklareli is a province in the Marmara region with a surface area of 6,550 kilometers. Together with the central district of the same name, Kırıkkale has 8 districts in total. Its population is 361,836. Kırklareli has railway and highway options among its transportation options.
Kırklareli, is one of the five provinces of Turkey in the European continent. It is not obvious when Kırklareli was built and how it was named. Kırklareli was called as ‘’sarantaecclesia’’ by Byzantines. When the Turks captured the region, they translated the word and called it as ‘’kırık kilise’’ which means broken church. In republican period, Kırklareli became a province and it started to be called as today. Kırklareli is one of the attractive provinces of Turkey with its history dating back to B.C. 6th century and its natural beauty. Because there aren’t enough archeological excavations in the region, the history of Kırklareli before the prehistoric period remains unknown. The first material documents about human beings in Kırklareli and its vicinity, where were understood to have been under the ice for a long time at the end of the ice ages, show the Neolotic age characteristics. Kırklareli hosted many different cultures and civilizations through the history.
Kırklareli, which has taken a place in ecological tourism with its natural beauties, attracts a lot of tourists with its coast and forests in Igneada region.
Langoz forests are located in İğneada, which is connected to Demirköy. The Langoz Forests, which are rarely seen in the world, are Europe’s largest flooded forest. The ground of the forest is completely covered with water. Mert, Erikli, Pedina, Saka and Hamam Lake are located in the forest, which contains many living and plant species. It is one of the places to be seen.
Dupnisa Cave, which is located in Igneada region, has an important touristic place. Dupnisa Cave has three entrances and is located underground. There are rich drop stone formations in the cave. Giant stalactites, stalagmites and columns, and curtain and flag drop stones and drop stone pools have a fascinating appearance. The total length of the cave is 2720 meters. Dupnisa means hole in Bulgarian.
Playing a role in cultural tourism, Kırklareli is rich in sacred structures. There are many mosques, churches, complexes and similar structures inside.
One of the oldest stone carving monasteries in the world, Aya Nikola Monastery is the best rock monastery example built during the Justinian period in the 6th century. Although there are finds that a wooden space was built in the 19th century, it has not survived. On the ground floor, there are churches, below, and a section for monks above.
