PAMUKKALE

Pamukkale, meaning “cotton castle” in Turkish, is a natural site in Denizli in southwestern Turkey. The area is famous for a carbonate mineral left by the flowing water. It is located in Turkey’s Inner Aegean region, in the River Menderes valley, which has a temperate climate for most of the year.

The Turkish name refers to the surface of the shimmering, snow-white limestone, shaped over millennia by calcium-rich springs. Dripping slowly down the vast mountainside, mineral-rich waters foam and collect in terraces, spilling over cascades of stalactites into milky pools below.

HISTORY

The history of Pamukkale is 2 BC. It has had strong civilizations since the Hellenistic period. 2,000 years ago, the Kingdom of Pergamum could not resist the attractiveness of Pamukkale travertines and built the City of Hierapolis next to the travertines. The ancient city of Hierapolis takes its name from Hiera, the wife of the King of Pergamum. Pamukkale was included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1988 due to these natural beauties.

TOURISM

Pamukkale is a tourist attraction. It is recognized as a World Heritage Site together with Hierapolis. Hierapolis-Pamukkale was made a World Heritage Site in 1988.

The underground volcanic activity which causes the hot springs also forced carbon dioxide into a cave, which was called the Plutonium, which here means “place of the god Pluto”. This cave was used for religious purposes by priests of Cybele, who found ways to appear immune to the suffocating gas.

Overshadowed by natural wonder, Pamukkale’s well-preserved Roman ruins and museum have been remarkably underestimated and unadvertised; tourist brochures over the past 20 years have mainly featured photos of people bathing in the calcium pools. Aside from a small footpath running up the mountain face, the terraces are all currently off-limits, having suffered erosion and water pollution at the feet of tourists.

PLACES TO VISIT

Pamukkale Travertines are rocks formed by collapse as a result of chemical reaction. When thermal water combines with air, calcium carbonate accumulates and it looks like cotton. Travertines, which are frequently visited by local and foreign tourists, amaze the viewers.

Antique Pool, known as a healing place, has been healing for a long time in Pamukkale history. We strongly recommend that you take the Ancient Pool, which is often visited by people with tension, rheumatism, vascular stiffness, and heart problems, to your list of places to visit in Pamukkale.

Hierapolis Ancient City, founded by the King of Pergamum in the 11th century BC, is the most important place in the history of Pamukkale. Hierapolis Antique City, located in the same place with Pamukkale Traventen, has a great importance in faith tourism due to the fact that  one of the Christ’s disciples was killed here.  Hierapolis Ancient City, which shed light on the history of Pamukkale, is known as the Holy City by archaeologists.

Pamukkale Natural Park, which is located in the ruins of Pamukkale, is highly preferred for a pleasant time. Pamukkale Natural Park, located just below the Pamukkale Travertines, has an artificial lake, 2 swimming pools and a mud pool. Pamukkale Mud bath, which is flooded by domestic and foreign tourists, is healing. In the evening, you will also have the chance to listen to live music in Pamukkale Natural Park, where you can watch a magnificent view of Pamukkale travertines illuminated with various illuminations.
